Moderna galerija (the Museum of Modern Art) is the Slovene national institution for modern and contemporary art. As a museum of Slovene modern art, it explores and presents the tradition of Slovene 20th century art; and as a museum of, and exhibition venue for, contemporary art, it focuses on new artistic practices and their contexts.

In addition to that, the museum is a documentation, study, research and education centre, a place for discussions and reflection, and for presenting art to a wider audience.

Moderna galerija regularly stages exhibitions of both Slovene and international contemporary art. It maintains continuity in acquainting the general public with the Slovene modern art tradition by featuring retrospectives and survey exhibitions of Slovene artists (displayed in contemporary and innovative ways), and follows the developments and new trends in Slovenia and abroad with exhibitions of contemporary art.

The institution draws on the specific cultural, historical and geopolitical circumstances in which it operates, as well as on the new reality of the globalised society. It sees its role as an intermediary between the national and the international, the local and the global. Its specific position enables it to function as a bridge between various geopolitical and cultural regions in Europe (East-West, North-South).

Moderna galerija operates on three sites in Ljubljana: its principal building, the allocated building of the former Yugoslav Army barracks complex Metelkova, and Mala galerija. The exhibition spaces of the principal building host the permanent display of selected works of Slovene 20th century art and changing exhibitions. Moderna galerija's main areas of activity comprise collections, exhibition programmes, archives and a photo archive, a library, and educational programmes.
